Double Bass What comes First? the bass or the lessons?

Thanks to all for your input. Luckily for me, my bass playing friend intends to continue lending me his bass for practice. Of course, he is also giving me lots of help. With that, and all I have learned here, I am already in a much better position to evaluate my needs. I intend to take my time, and now I feel pretty good about my eventual purchase.

My suggestion is to rent a bass for a couple of months while taking lessons. In the mean time play as many basses as you can. When you're ready to buy you'll have a much better idea of what you want.

This. It's what I did when a few years ago and it worked great. I rented a decent bass for $50 a month and figured out whether I'd stick with it or not.

Go to a place that sells/rent-to-owns for high schools and whatnot.
