What did I do wrong?

You didn't do anything wrong, but c'mon man... change??

I usually avoid panhandlers altogether so I won't condemn your effort, but is there no threshold below which an offering is insulting? 10 cents? A single penny?

I believe their reaction indicates that, in their opinion, your offering was below the threshold...

What is this world coming to? Yes change. Adds up.
Ungrateful planet we live on.

You did nothing wrong, their parent(s) or so-called parents did.

Normally the first person to spew the word "racist" at another is, indeed, the racist.

Spent 30+ years in New Orleans(moved to Texas in 1989), I used to leave a jam place(guy managed a small hotel in the French Quarter) at 3AM and walk 2 or 3 blocks to my unmolested van with a 64 Gibson Thunderbird or similar, no fear, no problems. It is not like that now.
Consider yourself lucky that you weren't mugged or shot, seriously. You met folks with the ingrained mindset of "the world owes me".
To quote Clint Eastwood, "Deserves got nothing to do with it".

PS:
Cardboard boxes in front of folks are meant for packs of banded $100 dollar bills amounting to $2,000 per pack. You didn't get the memo at the hotel you stayed at or what?/SARC

Wasn't kidding about the "consider yourself lucky". I think they're in the finals with Chicago for the playoffs in December's "USA's Deadliest City Championship". Here's this morning's activity and comments. Maybe it was those dern statues making comments again or something.

But wait! There's more including bonus footage of the perp and a "reporter" calling a magazine a clip. This one from this afternoon near the French Quarter, close to where our OP was.
Camera captures 'kid' with gun in afternoon shootout

So I'm walking in downtown New Orleans near St. Louis cathedral and walk by a man, woman, and little girl sitting on the street with a little cardboard box in front of them. The man was singing and tapping a beat, but not on the box. I took out some change, throw it in, and he starts saying "Thanks, Mr Racist", while the girl takes the change and angrily throws it on the ground. What gives?
Haters gonna hate. Racist comes in all color

There's a saying: "beggars can't be choosers".
