What did I do wrong?

A few months ago I replaced the pick ups in my P-bass with duncan hots. At the time of me replacing them I made a mess with the solder on my pots. They were dirty, solder was sticking out, sharp edges not nice at all. Well I've got more experince in the field of solder now so I went back and cleaned up my mess I removed some not needed solder, cleand it and what solder I couldn't remove. I spread a thin layer over the back of the pot. It's much cleaner now but when I play I get distorted, scratchy sound. It sounds alot like when you pull a chord out when the amp is on.

I adjusted my pick up hights and the amount of bass on my amp. I get it when I turn the knobs and out of no where when I play.

Could I have melted something inside the pot when I was cleaning up my mess? When I reattached the ground wires I put them closer together then before could that be the problem?

You can damage pots if you get them too hot with the iron, shouldn't need more than a few seconds to get a good solder. You might have gotten them too hot while cleaning them. Luckily they're not expensive.
