What did the Palmer PDI do for your souund?

What affect did the Palmer have on your sound? Your Sansamp PSA went through it right? Can you describe what your setup sounded like with and without it? I know Geddy Lee has used an older version for years and Alex Lifeson decided to go "cabinet free" on Rush's last tour as well.

Hi Brent,

It "naturalized" my non-amp DI sound in an important way. I only used it with NIN. It's in all those NIN live and rehearsal videos.

That line, along with a straight DI and a mic'ed amp during certain legs of that tour, provided the whole composite. The thing is, I'd say 60-70% of what you're hearing is that Sans Amp PSA1.1 into the Palmer.

I've been surprised at how rare speaker sims are in the bass community. As someone who loves the sound of a mic'd amp and thinks a DI is way too sterile, yet understands why a DI is cleaner due to lack of bleed, I've considered getting a speaker sim as a good middle ground.

How would you compare a palmer'd amp to a mic'd amp?

Direct signals seem to be the way of the future. Having your entire setup saved in a flash drive, or whatever.

Putting it simply: the Palmer is really an excellent sound and gives a great picture, with the right kind of grit, EQ curve flexibility, and a vague emulation "push" and "breathe" of the amp definitely superior to a POD or whatever. For bass and guitar. Very cool. However: a mic'd amp is always, always superior.

Hey man. I understand that you used the rack mounted stereo Palmer with NIN. I forget the model number... Doesn't matter. My question is have you used the DI box they make with the speaker emulation? I'm sure you don't have the control the full unit has, but I wondered if it had the same basic mojo.

Also, this is a little off the subject, (no actually, conpletely off the subject, ha ha) but what is that little pink pedal I always see you using? It's the one that is like 1/2 MXR sized.

Hmm. OK. I'm interested in checking out the DI since I really want to check out the big boy, but $180 is a little more affordable than $1,200 at the moment. :^) If I do go ahead and order one, I'll post about it.

Can you give a use example of the Chicklet? From what I read, it sounds like it could be really good for big kind of dubby stuff. (We can split off of this thread if it's worth relabeling the convo.)

Right. I've read the same, but what I don't know is if the goo is in the simulation itself, or with the ability to dial it in a little more than "bright" or "normal" switches, etc...

I think I'm gonna buy one to try. I'm doing way to many DI only performing with IEMs to not give it a shot. If I do, I'll record some sound samples and post them. I'll have an opinion then at that point, and maybe JMJ and others that own the rack unit can weigh in to what my samples sound like compared to their experiences, etc...
