What do I need for bass booms?

I play in a metal band and I'm thinking of getting a MIDI percussion pad but don't know any thing about what's good and what's not. I want to start using bass booms and other sounds live. Please help.

"Bass drops" is usually the term I hear being used by metalcore kids. Simply put, he wants to create huge sounding low-resonant tones for breakdowns.

Anyways, a MIDI controller of any sort (whether it be a keyboard, a drum trigger, etc.) or a sampler pad will allow you to do this sort of thing. However, you should probably research this a bit more to know exactly what it is you are getting into, and how far you want to take this.

If, for instance, you invested all this money/time/gear into doing nothing more than triggering a "bass drop", you probably could have just gotten an MP3 player and hit the play button at opportune times.

If you are looking to sample all sorts of things however, than I'd recommend reading up on DJ sampler pads, drum sample pads, and MIDI controllers/DAWs/computer music production.

You can do that. They're called 808 drops. Or you can play to a track with the sample on an iPod or something hooked to the PA. But the risk is you'll need to play with a click so you can be dead on. So split it with the click going to the drummer with headphones and the other to the PA.
