What do I need to tell my sound guy?

FOH has something going on that your monitor channel doesn't (doesn't matter if it's IEM or wedge in this hypothetical scenario), like loads of compression.

Ask the FOH engineer to take the outboard effects off your channel in the mains ( not during the service of course ) and see if he gets a similarly craptastic sound out there.

It may not be the fix, bit it should help in isolating the source of the problem.
