So i'm a senior in highschool, and am going to be going to college next year (either ASU or NAU). I'll be staying on campus in the dorms, but i'll wanna join a band and start playing gigs and whatnot during school. I have a couple basses, my 1x15 ashdown combo, and a drumset, and i'm thinking about getting an 8x10 pretty soon. What can/should i bring? i don't want my stuff to get stolen, and i don't want to look like an arsehole w/ a bunch of crap stuffed in a dorm, but still wanna gig.

I suggest that you should bring the smallest thing that you have, for practicing and maybe jamming with friends. Hang onto your money and wait to see what the scene is like -- what kinds of gigs materialize and the sorts of venues that host college bands might not justify owning huge gear. Also, transportation / parking tends to be a major hassle in any college town.

my combo is sufficient, and i've been looking for used 8x10s, i'm just not sure what i'm allowed to bring. i've been playing for 5 years and had the same amp for 4, so i've really been wanting something new, but if i wont be allowed then i can hold off on it.
Although an 8x10 pushes a hell of a lot of air and makes the ladies weak in the knees, it's a pig to haul around up and down stairs. At the end of the night when you have played your gig and have a certain special lady eyeing you up and wanting to get home with you as soon as possible, a punchy combo amp i.e. one trip load out, is what you want .. I have a Fender Bassman 250 as my practise rig and it really is quite spectacular tonally/voluminously. Carry as little as you can get away with to the gig. Let her carry out your bass to let her know you trust her (MAKE EFFIN SURE YOU TRUST HER WITH YOUR AXE) and rock her world. Kick ass and take no prisoners brother.
moving the equipment isn't so much what i'm worried about as where i'm going to keep it. i'm not sure what is generally acceptable as far as gear and such goes when kept in a dorm, and i don't want people effing with it all the time when i'm not there.

Don't jump on an 8x10 because it's an 8x10.
It is not "better" than other configurations, and it sounds like your next years won't be what a huge cab is suited for. I suggest you go for small and sufficient.
The life you will have there, and the variable security of dorm rooms can be a good reason to keep it simple, too.

Dude. Please bring something small enough to lock up. Too many people get their dorms broken into and stuff stolen out of. If i was you, I'd get a locking bass case, and use a bike chain around the handle and your bed. same with the combo handle if possible.
i was actually literally thinking of that. literally chaining all my sh*t to an immovable structure in the room, and getting a new skb case w/ a lock.
Don't think, DO. They make some pretty crazy bike locks for cheap, or a chain will do with a pad lock.
