from left to right or right to left?

it's kinda strange because when either the middle or one of the other two knobs is turned all the way down, there is totally no output. not sure which, gotta check it again next time i plug it in

I'm guessing that the two knobs closest to the neck are the volume knobs. There will be no output when both of those knobs are turned down, because you're basically turning off the volume.
