According to my guitarist, we play music for fun. We get paid for loading in and loading out.
Yes, we were packing up after a 4 hour gig when he said that.

I say that a lot, too, but usually to the guy who's holding the door open for us while we move all our big black boxes out at 2:30 am.

Back in 1974 I played in a sleazy cowboy place and made $37.50 per night. 9:00 pm to 1:00 am. It was great, with much fun to be had for a 20 year old. Most part time workers back then that I knew were making $2.25 an hour or some such.
A pro musician I know has always said that playing music is the best part time job ever.

Back then I made about 2.25 slinging hash at a Pancake House. Ten hour days grossed about $20. I played in an agency band and we made between $35 and $75 a night. Even with load in and load out we rarely worked more than 6 hours. Pretty much a no-brainer for me.

I played with a guitarist whose father wouldn't let him quit the Pancake House so he had to quit the band when we started working 4 nights a week. We got the polyester leisure suits, photos and played the Billboard top 100. Within 6 months we were working at least 4 gigs a week, sometimes squeezed in a wedding and within a year we were doing 6 nighters a couple of times a month. The guitarist was still slinging has 10 hours a day, but dad was happy.

I down-sized gear this past year. Bose PA system, 1 bass, RadialTonebone (no amp) and a wireless system. BTW, it now takes 15 min. to set up as opposed to 1+ hours for our previous endeavors. I'm finally getting paid to have fun to play music with my friends.

Exact reasons why the band I'm with got BOSE before inducting me as a replacement bassist in 2006....except we've 1 BOSE per player except the drummer. He's loud enough at most all venues. I prefer ACME's for "real bass sound and feel", with BOSE you get mostly "polite" low end with no gut-punching(also why the BOSE I use gets abused). BUT, it allows you to fit where traditional setups would be a nightmare. Rocking on the back of a yacht for example(drummer actually brought his but did not use it much except for the bass drum).

NOTE for no FOH gigs: experiments in the pasture out here show that the BOSE can be a great bass rig IF you run a crossover in front of the pole(set crossover point above the highest note on your G string) and send the lows to a BOSE PACKLITE amp feeding a front-loaded 18" and the rest to the vertical array. The BOSE internal crossover(140 Hz) dumps a lot of your G string(above C#) into the vertical array only.....kills the punch of a lot of that string(AND the lows "feel" for everything below 140Hz gets unheard/unfelt about 20~30 feet out. Polite bass.)
Note Frequencies
The crossover + 18 allows the lows' fundamentals to project with as much loudness/authority as the vertical array. Cheap Seismic Audio 18" cab was used for these experiments.

My father (and mother too) did everything they could to support our band endeavors, and not push us. He would have felt terrible but not said anything if I would have taken a hash slinging job instead of a gig.

I did tell a DJ friend he gets paid to move equipment, because he would be spinning disks anyway.

I get paid to leave the basement, otherwise that's where I'll be. Now if I could get people to come over to the basement and drop off a wad of cash every time I go down there and make some noise....... that would be nice, save me a lot of trouble , mostly back trouble.
