What do you do to stay awake on the drive home?

Back when I lived in L.A. and did a lot of gigs an hour from home, I found that the local CBS news station did a 2 am hourlong broadcast of classic radio dramas. Tons of great stuff - The Lone Ranger, The Shadow, The Jack Benny Show, Sgt. Preston (and his wonder dog Yukon King) and more. Hokey, interesting, sometimes exciting, sometimes funny, and they were great for keeping me awake.

I've got them on MP3 discs. 70 hours per disc. Makes the drive quite enjoyable. I've been through the entire Jack Benny run, Gunsmoke, the Whistler, the Shadow, Have Gun Will Travel and too many others to recall at the moment.

I'm currently 1/2 way through the Johnny Dollar series.

These things make a huge difference. I'm awake and alert for the drive home without being so hopped up on caffeine that I'm wrecked for sleeping.

My regular gig commute was 2 hours one way, with a few a bit shorter and a couple a bit longer, 50K a year before I gave up full time gigging.

I still enjoy listening to them when behind the wheel.

I can always remember a church gig I did. We were away for the weekend for a retreat, and thanks to a lot of confusion over transport, the worship team including myself didn't leave the actual hotel where we'd been staying until midnight. Now I knew it was a 2hr drive back and that if I went to sleep at any point that night, I wouldn't be awake in time for lectures (8.30am starts!) the next morning. So I decided to stay awake. So I, along with the driver, ended up with me giving the driver a lesson in Koine Greek whilst he was driving back.

not sure if you were kidding but I've actually smacked myself a few times. It works, but alas - not a viable solution

Well, usually I can pull all-nighters pretty easily. However, I have gotten desperate a few times, and pulling over is not my thing, I always want to be home like NOWza. So, its either drive 100mph (not a good idea) or punch myself. Haven't knocked a tooth out yet! :bassist:

Funny all the people that listen to talk radio to keep them awake.

Coast to Coast AM. lol

Even if I am not paying attention, or the station starts fading in and out, it still keeps me awake for some reason.

Fast food with alot of fat and carbs along with a really sugary/caffeinated soft drink. Sure, it might take a year off of your life, but it's better than the 40 or 50 that you'll lose from crashing into a parked big rig.
