Really? What's it like in the engineering management field?

I'm in my last year of college and I'm apply to business schools right now. How many years after business school did it take for you to actually get into a management position?

I worked as a technical person in my industry (not maggot ranching, geotechnical engineering) for over 15 years before I got into management. Now, as the CEO (with over 36 years in the business), when I interview young graduates, I'm not eager to hire them if I get the sense that they aspire to be in management in, say, five years (I call them "climbers"). In fields like mine, you gain the respect of the people who work for you by demonstrating that you can do their job at least as well as they can. I doubt that many of our 15- and 20-year professionals could be led effectively by a 27-year-old. We have some up-and-comers in their early thirties, but they have already established themselves as excellent project managers and technical resources.

You might have better luck climbing into management in the financial industries.

when im well enough i have a small business fixing computers, strictly home users, no business contracts etc.

have done for about 9 years fulltime, previously the only decent job i ever had was a radio station techie/gopher

Graduated in June with a BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry, currently about to study a MSc in Nanotechnology and Microsystems. Thankfully the MSc is well funded, so no other job needed
