Mainly play fretted. Almost 40 years old and have been playing 27 years. I more recently got into fretless basses. Have so far owned a fender Mexican jazz and sterling by musicman ray 34cafl that were fretless. They were fun but I’m really a 5 string guy and would prefer a fretless 5er. I could see fretless becoming my main thing eventually if I found the right one. I really do enjoy them. And love how they sound in a variety of music. They sound great in everything from little duos with an acoustic guitar to metal bands. For example I’m a big fan of these guys.

I had a Squier VM Fretless Jazz for two years and enjoyed the feel and sound of it. I ultimately ended up trading it towards an Ibanez Roadstar II RB630 (P-Bass) and haven’t looked back.

It got to the point where I wasn’t enjoying playing the Fretless because I was always so worried about left hand finger placement. Now I don’t worry so much.

All fretted for me, I used to play a fretless before I took a 18 years hiatus. When I got back at it after I had all of my basses stolen from a break and entry, I got new basses and they were all fretted... Since this, I only purchased fretted ones.
