Very good article. When I first started playing, I had these short term and long term goal charts. I had some good instruction and a lot of material to choose from. I was so motivated, etc. so I managed to make a fair amount of progress in a short amount of time. I need to get back into using that stuff, because I've been really drifty lately...

I record a few chords on guitar with my phone and just practice against that.
Arpeggios, scales, 1/8 notes, whole notes, whatever, just looking for what sounds good to me.

Ill say i also practice 2 octave scales building speed via a *rhythm tree. Its helped a lot.

*rhythm tree is progressing fron quarter notes to quarter triplets to eigth notes etc etc with the same tempo on the metronome.
