What does it mean to have "Pro gear"?

I usually take it to mean you have gear that’s quiet, not underpowered and will work day in and day out under normal conditions…or that they are brand snobs. The antithesis of pro gear would be the person who has a 15W amp that I now need to mic through a PA who has to sit cross legged with his bass pressed against the wall because that’s the only way his output jack makes contact with the cable. That ain’t it chief.

Duct tape is semi-pro. Gaff tape been pro for decades. Boob tape don't need no credit.

Amateurs use duct tape.

Pros use gaff tape.

To me, it's bass/pedals/cables that don't buzz too much, a strap and a way to attach it (I've seen too many people who have to sit because their instrument doesn't have strap buttons), and an amp that can carry a large bar. All must be reliable too.

I would say...
It needs to be reliable and loud enough to be heard clearly up to the size venue that requires a PA for your bass and drums to go through.
If they need to run the drums through the PA... The rest of the band will likely be in there too.
(Get a good DI too.)

If they say...
Must have pro gear... And a PA...
Run away fast.

You don't want any part of that...

Power, stability and sound - no order of preference.

And not as much of an issue for bass, but it's the opposite of pro gear when a guitarist shows up with a solid state amp and can't explain why other than it's cheap.

And correctly or not, the only guys I know with Behringer amps - bass or guitar - have 'em for seconds, or for guests.

Often it means outdated gear that was once top of the line.

Ultimately, it's up to you to decide if you think a piece is professional grade or not.

Part of it is The Uniform and part is don’t be showing up with an amp you know is underpowered/unreliable/bottomless or a bass with intermittent pickups or cables.

There are a lot of people not thinking they’re wasting other people’s time with their budget wonder build held together with two pieces of duct tape and a bungee cord that sounds just as good as a a Stingray into a GK…

…and you’re just lucky enough to not have had to suffer this.
