Personally, audio interface wise, I would avoid everything under the Native Komplete Audio 6 in the chart at the end of my (sorry...) loooong post
Keep in mind that not all those interfaces are still in production and some newer ones could’ve be or hadn’t be tested. The result is a mix with low Round Trip Latency and driver efficiency. As an example, you could have an interface going down to 32 samples buffer yielding 2ms RTL but you couldn’t play anything with two tracks without clicks and pops= worthless even if RTL is low.
On the other end, as an example again, an AI with 64 buffers and 4ms but able to play a zillion tracks=wonderful. A little bit of exaggeration but I guess you get the point.
You’ll rarely see someone mentioning performance problems with RME as they are cream of the crop. In house driver development but even an used Babyface could be pricey.
Focusrite and company: you’ll see a couple of bad reports but they are way cheaper and drivers are developed by one or two of the same external firms. To my knowledge (I could be wrong), only RME and Lynx have in-house driver developers.
For the record, I’ve used without problems in this list:
- Presonus Quantum 2626: you need a Thunderbolt 3 port and direct monitoring isn’t possible, you absolutely need a DAW to monitor. It doesn’t bother me as the RTL is so low and efficiency so great that it’s far the best cheap « sound card » (relatively speaking) at this time;
- Focusrite Scarlett range (2i2 and 18i20 second gen, avoid first generation);
- Roland Quad and Octa: I still use my OctaCapture to record kid’s choir or projects with my MacBook Pro and Reaper;
- Native Instruments KA6: the interface that my principal bought for me at school back in 2013;
- Not on this list, an Edirol FA-66 FireWire. Avoid FireWire as this protocol is kind of obsolete.
