What famous bassist have you been able to meet?

Many years ago I attended a very informative workshop by Gary Willis at First Bass in Denver (which sadly went out of business). We chatted for a bit afterwards. I was in the early stages of transitioning to playing mostly fretless. When I asked him some questions about his bass and how he had it setup he handed it to me and said "Here, try it" and then explained some things as I self-consciously noodled. Super nice guy.

Also a number of years ago I was at Bass Northwest in Seattle, trying out a Rob Allen bass for the first time. A guy who worked there named Steve was helping me out. Really nice guy. Turned out it was Steve Fossen from Heart.

I got to see and ask Michael Manring a few questions at a limited audience of 40 people at The Bass Club in Chicago back in 2008.

I asked him if he ever tried to play a Chapman Stick.
He said "Yes.I suck at it"

A while later,I asked him if he ever tried doing what you do on a six string bass.
He said "As soon as you pick up a six string bass you are obligated to play it in a certain way"
Which I found surprising.

I also asked him if he would play "Greetings Earthling"
And he did.

This’ll be fun.

Mark Dresser (lessons)
Carole Kaye (lessons)
Jaco (while he ate a pre-show steak on Sunset Blvd. Huge hands.)
Chris Squire (at a party)
Glen Moore (Oregon, the band)
Sting (ran into him at a bar post-concert this year. He was really nice. A very important moment for me.)

big hands ? Jaco. yeah fairly .
but compared to Paul Jackson!! ( whose deep tones i love ) Paul had / has huge fingers
Hadrien said his fingers are not that big
but what a virtuoso .
But for me big fat thick fingers invite a certain tone i’m not sure smaller slimmer fingers can manage . maybe i’m all wet ?

I met Steve DiGiorgio when I played a festival that Sadus was playing many years ago. I was a bit star struck and asked him for a picture but he misheard "pitcher" and was like sure lets drink some beer lol. I was young and broke as hell and had about $20 bucks to my name so a pitcher of beer might as well have been a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle. I sheepishly clarified that I just wanted a picture and he graciously obliged. Still regret not having a beer with the man...

In an elevator with Rev. Horton Heat and Jimbo. We did chat.
Charles Mingus gave me some real dirty looks when I chowed down on my hamburger that was served at the start of his set.
