What happened to the fun in TalkBass?

I see the decline of TB in general as directly proportional to the growth of OT and the increasing number of juviniles (not a reference to physical age) who have little interest in actually playing/practicing bass

if OT was to go the way that a certain other forum in the Lobby went, well ... it wouldn't bother me any at all

maybe a good compromise would be to make OT available only to supporting members. it would certainly curtail a significant amount of work for the Mods here, since a great majority of their pain is babysitting those who do not directly offer financial support of this site

all the best,

I would make a good part of this forum for supporting members only, to be able to post more than 5 times a day etc.

I have some theories. I think the psychology of what makes a person want to be a bass player has something to do with it. Sometimes bass players are somewhat unrecognized and underestimated in a band scenario, so a fair amount of blowhard-ism fosters itself here almost as means of compensation for the self-perceived lack of recognition.

Sometimes a poster will just state something honestly of the top of his or her head and the next comes a torrent of "well, I know better than you, jerk" type of responses. I think those responses say more about the responder than they do about original stater (some of them being only 15 and somewhat naive, too :p). All in all though I find it very entertaining and I often spend time checking posts when I should be working! :D

Unless you're a mod? Then you are the one with the fire extinguisher.

Like I said, I don't agree with everything the mods do or say. They keep that peace as defined by the forum owner. I like TB for the bass content first and foremost. OT, is for entertainment. Consider it a TV channel, you can always change it. There's probably millions of other forums on the internet. If this one isn't to your liking, I'm sure you could find another.

i think alot of people are just trying to make MM style postings and stuff like that too...leave that to MM, he's better at it. plus it seems like alot of the posts are just becoming "hot chick thread" after hot chick thread, granted, they are awesome. but when it gets to the point someone posts and pic and the only thing for 4 pages is guys saying oh she's hot, blah blah and no other pics even that becomes a little less than enjoyable...but whatever

+1 IMHO, this area is very well moderated. I don't agree with everthing the mods do but realize they must keep the peace for the good of the forum. If you can't take the heat in OT, get out of the fire.

This is the best moderated site on the net, hands down. If you can't take the heat--which rises to lukewarm at most--you really might want to consider seeking greener pastures. But if you DO walk away, don't post some whiny "Talk me out of leaving TB!" thread (which this thread is perilously close to) followed by a "Hey, I'm back!" thread a week later. No one likes an attention whore. Just go, and come back when you're ready. There is no dishonor in sitting out for a while.

The tone of this site has always waxed and waned. I remember having this same discussion about 8 years ago, and we've had it at least annually since. And yet somehow, despite the occasional pantie bunching (including mine), life on TB goes on. This site is bigger than any one of us.

Not a talk me out of leaving post by any means. We have just had some discussion through PM about the site and was curious how many people felt this way (that are supporting members) that's all.

there was a period very recently where a few folks came out of nowhere, thought they were the 2nd coming, posted some funny stuff but a lot of lame, offensive crap, scaring away many valuable but not quite as visible posters until they finally were banned. what you are feeling now is the after effects. it's happened here at talkbass before - goes in two year cycles, seems like.

the unfortunate, ironic thing though is that these johnny knoxville wannabes were given multiple chances to straighten up and fly right, and yet still refused to play nice with the rules of the site. giving these so-called "interesting" members all these chances definitely cost us quite a few good members. it's a shame, really.

just don't blame the current state on the loss of the obnoxious jacktards. the foundation of this site is the day to day rules-playing members, the ones that just want to hang and maybe goof sometimes. the loss of any of these guys really hurts the site.

I think that's kind of generalizing to an extreme. It seems to me as though most of the trouble comes from supporting members who are just pushing the envelope all the time. I don't think putting OT on a supporting member basis only would help anything except decrease the number of posts, and alienate alot of non-supporting members who are cool and honestly want to contribute to OT (if such a thing can happen).

As to the relative stupidity and or interest level of certian threads and posts, it's all about opinion. IMO some are ridiculous and a waste space, and the same is true for everyone. But I don't complain about it. Live and let live, and trust the mods to make the right desicions to make this a sane place.

If you aren't part of the solution, you're part of the problem. (Unless of course, you are a chemistry student or teacher. Then if you're not part of the solution you're part of the precipitate) :smug:

Point being, if you want to bring the fun back, then do it. What is missing from OT in your opinion? After all, there's no reason you can't start threads like the ones you are looking for.

And if username n/a is really your exemplar, then just wait until summer. There will be plenty of teenager threads then. :atoz:

Wow. I'm not sure what's more sad. The fact that you posted that, or the fact that I knew what you were talking about and subsequently laughed. :D

Also :atoz: to the teenagers part.
