i am trying to build my own 6 string bass, im looking at using the emg 45tw pickups. these are pickups that can be either single coil or dual coil using push pull potentiometers. but it says that when using two of the TW Pickups in the same instrument it is not recommended that BT or BQ Systems be used. im not sure what a bt or bq system is. can someone explain?

That is their preamps. BT=Bass/Treble and BQ is the one with variable midrange. They come in single knob (BTS, BQS) or stacked knobs (BTC, BQC) setups.
The issue is that the TW pickups have two complete EMG pickups in one case, a humbucker and stacked single coil, so I think they are saying they draw too much current to also work with the preamps.

You cant use the BTC or BQS system because of the blend pot.
They need a push-pull pot for each pickup to split the pups.
But you can use the BTC or BQS control, just not the system.

Oh is that it? Well you certainly don't need to use push pulls, as you can use toggle switches, and then still use the blend. The only difference between the Control and the System is the value of the blend and volume pots. I've taken the BTC System, which is intended only for active pickups, changed the blend pot to a 500K, and used them with passive pickups, thus making it a BTC Control.
You don't actually "split" those pickups; you switch between the humbucker and Jazz unit outputs. Both are hum canceling, there are no single coil EMG pickups.
You can actually use them both at the same time, and even run the outputs of both units to their own volume controls. They used to state you that you can use them simultaneously, but they don't anymore.
so do i need to do anything special besides using a push pull pot for these pups? or do i just wire it up like a regular 2 pickup bass?
