a subjective term that we bass players throw around to sound hip. It has no concrete meaning other than one that discribes a bass tone that we happen to like. One man's Growl is another man's Lame...
Use it as you see fit.

Yes. If it doesn't growl without an amp it won't growl with one. Being in the low end of the sound spectrum, it may be difficult to hear, however.

For growl.. I consider the bass player from Spiral Architect to have just that.. Sickening!! Check it out.. (not much on you tube unfortunately)

IMO growl can be enhanced by boosting low mids (250hz 400hz range) But natural growl exists.. take a MM Stingray unplugged and really dig in.. you'll hear it!!
