Hmmm, if I'm playing my double bass on the 2nd floor of a wood structure apartment, the people downstairs aren't going to complain about the tone, they're going to say the bass is too loud. So no, I'd say it's about volume, but tone might be a byproduct.

Most double bassists would like to think that tone is under their control, between their technique, and the build and setup of their double bass.

It's all speculation unless you can ask the engineer who mic'd up the room for the session.

Side question....what's this on the floor....a boundary mic of some sort?

My guess is an attempt to achieve some kind of 'coupling' to increase bass volume.

It is scary.

I've fallen off a stage backwards before, playing Dobro, sitting in a chair that had a leg fall off the stage. It was humorous, and I was very lucky.

That complaint is going to happen regardless. But if you use the platform, the downstairs apartment may appreciate the higher quali

That is the foot of the mic stand. The shadow/shading of the black and white make it a little confusing.

I like to move around a bit on stage and any raised platform where I'm hugging an edge gives me the heebiejeebies.

It serves to acoustically isolate the bass from the ground and elevate it of floor. I’ve played that way on a stage. We used to do that before amplifiers, so the bass projected and one could hear better. Results were mixed. Dampit made a smaller portable platform for Bass.
