I have come across a 1952 P-Bass that has been refinished, also with a replaced chrome pick-up guard, and a replaced pick guard. Everything else (body, neck, pick ups, control knobs, pots, bridge, nut, machines, and bridge guards) are original. Assuming it plays well (I have not got my hands on it yet), I have been told by a vintage guitar dealer that refinishing immediately takes 40% off the value. Assuming that this instrument would be about $15,000 in original and excellent condition, I am guessing a fair price as a refinished instrument would be about $8000. Do my numbers look reasonable?

You're probably in the ball park. That doesn't seem outrageous at all. Things have to be correct to score that dough.
True, value is indeed whatever a buyer is willing to spend and a seller is willing to accept.... For example, a desperate buyer will pay more, and a reluctant buyer would pay less. As I have an 'average' level of interest in this instrument, I am asking the forum what would be the average price paid for an instrument of this type....
There seems to be more refins popping up for sale lately. I always figured 50% reduction with a good refin and even then I would hesitate. As mentioned earlier, *everything* else needs to be correct to get real money. Buying correct pickguard and pickup cover to get it to the 50% value could be very costly. My guess is that it'd bring around $4-5K with refin and those changed parts.
Agree with shrigg. I wouldn't pay more than 5K with those mods, unless you just fall in love with the bass as a player. (which is dangerous)
