What is this routing for?

I was looking at bass bodies, and came across this puppy. While I like it for building a "telecaster" bass, I also am a bit confuzzled. What is this routing for? I'm assuming it's for a pickup. Apparently I live under a rock, and have no clue what kind of unit would fit in there. I'm almost sure that if/when it's explained, I'll do a facepalm and go Doh!

Ahh! So it's a guitar body! (even though it's advertised as a bass body) This explains it. Thank you! I guess this body is off the list.

I think I remember seeing on TB someone modded a Tele guitar body for bass. I think they deepened the neck pocket to where the neck pickup cavity is (basically removing that bit of wood "wall"), and if you put the bridge all the way back, that bridge pickup cavity is sort of where a P pickup would be... Assuming the scale works out (I think that bass I saw may have used a 32" scale neck), and if you figure out the cosmetics, and don't mind the possible neck-dive, I can see this working just fine for bass... ok, that's a lot of ifs...

You are exactly right. If the bridge holes haven’t been drilled, this is a good candidate for that kind of project!

Please note that a Telecaster shaped body is going to have neck-dive with a bass-length neck on it, especially if it's a 4-inline headstock.

They're also inherently more difficult to play than an instrument with a longer upper horn, because they put the nut farther away from your shoulder.

While this is often true, it isn't universally true. A heavier body with a lighter neck will alleviate this. So will a shorter scale length (32", as mentioned above).

So will chopping off the headstock entirely.
