So...I know...it's not being used by a bassist...but...it could be...and it's fascinating to me. Some type of ebow/talkbox/wallpaper remover lookin' dealy.

I ask: What is the little gadget that Nels Cline is yelling into and holding to his strings? It seems to alter timbre in accordance to his voice or mouth shape...he gets very intense with it around the halfway mark.

That's pretty tripped out. I couldn't tell whether he was masturbating or rubbing his strings with a hockey puck. Whatever he was doing it sure seemed to irritate the whales.
