A SWAG on my part is that it's an extra piece on the string tree to keep the A in place.

I always did on my MIM Jazz. The angle between the nut and the tuner, even if wound properly, was just a little shallow.Why? Who ever had a problem with their A?
wth....mean while,fenders comming up with stupid crap like this, fender japan's getting p basses with model 1 pickups at the neck,and jazzes with MM buckers in the middle.

Those basses were modded by the store that's selling them, not Fender Japan
