Double Bass What is your favorite cab for upright?

Hey abg,
I've owned a Bergantino HT112 and I currently own a Wizzy (NOT M-line). Both sound great but I like the sound of the Wizzy a little bit better for DB and a lot more better for slab. ;)
The Wizzy is a little less focused and boomy in a very solid and musical way, think Motown. 29lbs.
The Bergie sounds more modern, is slightly more accurate, and has a beefier low end. 39lbs.
I really believe only a bass player could tell the difference!!
Both cabinets are built like tanks!
FWIW, I traded the Bergie for a bow, because ultimately the 10lb difference made a difference to me.

I must say that I have read alot about the EA's in this forum for DB. I am sure that alot of other cabs sound fantastic as well. Some of these have been mentioned above. But I must say I have heard about more guys using EA cab's probably more than any other. Probably not so much in the EB forums but more so in the DB forums. I have been looking at the wizzy and the MLine wizzy for a while. I am really leaning towards the MLine. It really isn't much more weight and alot of guys really like it for DB as well as some liking it for EB as well. It really is hard to make comparisons by what others hear. But when you don't have a bass specialty store near you then this site is like the next best thing. If anybody has any other suggestions I would be glad to hear them. Thanks alot.

Too bad Belleville isn't a little closer to Chicago. You could try mine.

I have the M Line and CXL12 and the Wizzy 10. I really couldn't live without any of the 3. The Wizzy 10 is amazing for low to medium volume gigs. The M Line is probably the best sounding of the 3, but has volume limitations. ( VERY loud gigs) The CXL is surprising. If I had no EQ, I'd hate it. If you tame the mids with EQ, it is by far the tightest and most focused of the 3. It also goes unbelievably
loud. I double on many gigs on 5 string electric and even on a fusion gig have never had the need for a second speaker. I sold one of my CXL's because contrary to my expectations never had the need for a second cabinet.

i still adore the sound of the raezers, even though the current rig is the genz benz 10t, with ext ext 10 for loud gigs. even though the raezer is relatively light, it's not light enough for me ... but it does sound fab ... i used to own two, now just one and i'd be open to selling it quite reasonably. i keep hanging on to it for that one gig it would be perfect for ...

jeff.

Don't know why, but when I respond to questions like this one by saying that the Raezer's Edge Bass 10 and Bass 12 sound better to me than any other cabs of similar configuration, I feel like a lone wolf howling at the moon. Regardless of which power plant I use (an AI Focus-III, AI Clarus-SL or EA iAmp 300), these RE cabs always do it for me.

Well, JR, I take your praise of the RE, mitigated as it may be, as a kind gesture. Regarding the weight issue of the RE Bass 10 v. EA Wizzy 10, I believe the RE-B10 is 22 lbs while the Wizzy 10 weighs in at 16 lbs. I was hoping that the Wizzy-10 would compare nicely to the RE-B10 because of its light weight, but I find that it is falls so far short that I still take the RE to 95% of my gigs. Amp EQ with the Wizzy is extreme (highs: 9:00 o'clock, mids 10:00 o'clock, lows 3:00 o'clock) where the RE takes a flat setting of twelve o'clock across the spectrum.

I already own a EAW 15 and I think it come in at about 69lbs. I put a Peavey Lo-Rider 8ohn in it. I also have a Dr.Bass 2460D coming in a4ohm. So thats that. With the iAMP800 that rig should kill for either. I usually have have the 15 with iAMP on stage because I use "in ears" at my regular gig. So I am looking for a definite one cab for more acoustic situations. Luckily I live about 15 minutes from Bob Heil's shop, so I am going to call and see if he has made that PR-40 in a smaller design yet. Great feedback on that mic from TBer's. Looking to get the Doubler amp from EA this spring. Bob Gollihur said you can run both channels at the same time, Nice. I'm still flipping back and forth between the wizzy and the MLine though. Damn these GAS pains.

my personal favorite is actually the Acoustic Image downfiring cab that comes on the combos or you can buy without the amp on it. depending on your needs. i dont use mine for trying to project sound to the audience, it sounds really good to me on stage playing in a acoustic string band. i run a direct out of my contra amp for foh sound.

i do own the wizzy m-line as well. that is also a great cab, but usually puts too much volume on stage for my situation. part of the reason i prefer the ai cab is it seems to be more forgiving of poor technique. the wizzy definatley puts out what you put into it. there are alot of folks the donwfiring ai cab does not work for, but for my playing situation it seems to do the best job.

If anyone is looking for a cab like this.. I have one that am no longer using... would love it to go to a good home.

PM if interested.

EA CXL112. It's the best single cab I have. I do double duty with slab bass and the thing sounds great with either bass. It's a little more articulate than my 112 wizzy and definately moves more air. The attenuator is a big help in dialing in a sound to match the room. I can go from country to punk rock with this thing and it takes it all in stride.

If you can effort it:
To my experience the AER Basscube is the best there is for DB. Lots of punch and tons of tight low end in a small package. Unfortunately it's not lightweight.

When paired with the Epifani UL112 for sparkling mids you can get a crowd moving. Never heard anything that even comes close.
