What kind of sequencer/drum machine do I need?

I've been looking for a used yamaha qy in the last few weeks after seeing my teacher', but they are pretty rare and the price has gotten pretty high as people seem to collect them.

I'm looking for something that can do beats and metronome clicks while playing chords. Something that will allow me to place chords on a beat, like I could do with band in a box. I have a korg pandora that I use as a drum machine but it's limiting in the sense that I can't have one bar of a shuffle followed by 3 bars where only the one is played. Does that makes any sense?

I'd really love something that can do what Victor Wooten uses during his clinics when he'll play a groove with a beat then the beat goes off and comes back 3 bars later. He does it in the latest videos at bassplayer.tv.

Anyway, you guys got any suggestions on good affordable drum machines/sequencers that can do all of this?

The Yamaha QYs really are the way to go, there never has been anything else like them on the market.

The original QY10 is the most basic but the hardest to program thanks to a very tiny display. It comes up for $100 or less on eBay quite regularly.

Since you can buy a QY100 for $500 brand new, I assume that's too expensive for you?

You could always go with a notation program and use your computer. Sample libraries are certainly sounding good these days...especially for a "practice" tool.

Victor actually provided the samples for this program I've been working on called "Progression." I'm sure that it could do what you're looking for...but not sure if you're looking for a software option.

Just thought I'd throw the option out there since you mentioned Victor....

I recently bought the Zoom MRT-3b and I'm extremely happy with the little box. It sound good, easy to program and, altough the instruction don't mention it, you can record MIDI patterns straight from computer using the box MIDI in. I already programmed 3 complete songs in it that way. No problem to do the Wooten thing, in any number of ways.

You can hook-up a pedal to it and program it so it start/stop, start/pause, mute, play pads etc.

I paid 79 bucks off the 'bay, brand new in the box with warrantee.
