I do agree that it depends on the bass. Also the type of sound people want.for my j bass i use ernie ball super slinkies (looking to try comparable thomastiks though). on my fretless though, i go flatwounds. to use roundwounds on fretless you have to put coat after coat of epoxy on the fingerboard or else it'll get chewed up. flats also give it a great sound for later steely dan type stuff
