What kind of strings do you use?

I've been a guitar player that is getting more and more calls for bass. Workin' hard to play the instrument properly and I'm adamant about NOT being a guitar player on a bass.
I've built a very sweet and articulate swamp ash J bass, roseboard neck, vintage hardware and SD Vintage pickups. the bass is finished in very thin nitro lacquer.
I'm looking for some opinions from the experienced guys out there for string manufacturer, gauge and type (i.e. round, ground, flat, whatever).
I currently have GHS Boomer, light guage and think I could go to mediums.
I play a broad range of gigs: pop, roots, alt country, classic rock, etc...so variety/versitility is key. My gut sense is to go to medium rounds..maybe try some D'Addarios for the next set.
Thanks in advance for your recommendations as the price to experiment is high. I'd like to get some opinions to narrow the band of options that I start with.

I had Fender Tapewounds (9120s) on my Axstar. I loved the feel of them, and they did a great job of reducing the "trelby-ness" of the Axstar giving it a great warm tone.

When I got my Cirrus and sold the Axstar, I strung the Cirrus with Peavey Cirrus roundwound strings. They're actually quite nice as roundwounds go, but weren't my cup of tea. After so long playing the Fender tapewounds I really didn't like the rough feeling roundwounds, no matter how rich their tone. So now I've got the Cirrus strung with La Bella tapewounds (760N). These feel much better than even the Fenders to my hands, and I'm enjoying the tonal palette I have available between these strings and the Cirrus' preamp.

I voted: Flatwounds

La Bella 760FS flatwounds are my favorite strings. I started on La Bella flatwounds way back in the sixties and went through a roundwound faze in the late seventies and most of the eighties but missed the feel and pure fundamental so in the early nineties, I came back to flatwounds to stay.

I was playing the 760FL's (43-104) for a few years but I've settled on the FS's (45-105) because they give a little more low end thump and have the tension that I feel is just about right and not too tight. By the way, these strings are incredibly smooth and I recently re-strung my 3 basses with brand new sets and the finish and quality is IMHO top notch.
