I play a five string (35') with neck thru capability. I would like some strings that sound aggressive and bright, but would like them not to be so tinny that I can't get any warmth from them. I know I'm probably looking at stainless steel, but I have no clue as to flatwound, roundwound or anything like that. I would prefer good tension, and can string only the top thru for equality. Any ideas, keeping in mind I want to make this set last?

What kind of strings for aggressive 5-er?

Give DR Fat Beams a shot. Designed in conjuction with Marcus Miller. Tonally they should be close to what your looking for, and they fit a 35" scale.

I used alot of strings and i've always searched some agressive strings with good highs and great slap tone.
I tried SS always (aside from a set of sadowskyes blue nickel) but now i believe i found the ones: D'addario XL nickel rounds. Awsome highs, great tension (high but not to) and agressive, grindy with great punch tone.
Great feel and awsome price!

If you go with the D'addario's, you'll need to get Super Long scale for the 35" scale.
+1 to the Fat Beam suggestion. Great tension. Feel like nickel, but sound like stainless. Last a very long time, and will easily fit 35". I slightly prefer the tone of the Fat Beams to the Hi Beams, but Hi Beams can also be considered. The Fat Beams are a little "beefier" in the low mids to my ear.

I've never used them so I can't comment, but if you decide those are the ones you'd like to try, make absolute certain they'll fit a 35" scale. Some will, some won't.

I'm on my first set of DR DDT's on my Carvin 5 string. These are the best strings I've used in my almost 30 years of playing. Great tension and I love the extra thick guage of the DDT5-55 set. I don't change my strings that often and my last set of High Beams lasted about a year. Of course, my band only played a few gigs in that time but we practice once a week and I practice at home too. I'm hoping these will last as long.

The DR Fat Beams sound like they could be the ones for you. I went with DR Sun Beams, because my bass sounds aggressive to me, so I wanted to take some of the edge off, and the Sun Beams do just that for me. I can get a more aggressive sound when i want it, but they let me mellow out until i need that.
