What makes a Fender, A Fender?

A parts bass with all Fender parts or Fender-licensed parts is not a Fender.

A Fender bass with DiMarzio pickups or a non-stock Bad Ass bridge is a modified Fender.

A repaired bass with a Fender neck or a Fender body and essentially all otherwise original stock Fender parts could be considered a heavily modified Fender. A MIM is a Fender, and so is a MIJ, and so is a MIK, because they were all made to the specifications of and according to the instructions of Fender corp, and Fender corp decided to brand them with the Fender brand.

A Squier is not a Fender, it is a Squier that is made by Fender corp. ... It also doesn't matter if Fender puts their name in fine print on the headstock under the Squier brand. Squier is a separate brand from the Fender brand, and yes, it too is owned by Fender corp.

You're thinking of OLP. That's the licence built MM style bass. Yes, I do believe OLP's licence didn't get renewed.

The Sub was a less expensive bass actually built by EBMM.

Kind of like a Music Man Higway One... sort of.

It is that simple, but I think the other side wants to say the Squiers really ought to have a Fender decal so let's not let labels get in the way.

But that misses the point. The issue isn't whether Squier makes a good P or J bass or not, it's the decal that Fender Corporate selects.

OK... let's say I have a real Fender Jazz here, fresh out of the shop...

I replace the tuners with low mass ones and stick a badass bridge on it... I sell the original parts on

later on I stick a custom pickguard on it... I sell the original one on

I break the neck and replace it with an unlicensed neck, the original neck gets stripped and chucked

I replace the pickups with hotter aftermarket ones, sell the original pickups on

I replace the control plate completely with a drop in Audere one, someone gives me a good price for the original complete control plate (some guy working on improving his Squier)

now I've been gigging this as a Fender up and down the country... even though most of it isn't Fender anymore...

I now have a rear-ender and the body is badly mangled so replace it with a Squier VMJ body (because hey, it's just lying around and I don't have the money to get a proper licensed Fender body from Warmoth or track one down on fleabay)...

From what I can tell, the only original parts are some screws, the neckplate and the string tree...

Can I still call it a Fender?
