Hi,
What are the main differences between a less expensive and more expensive fretless bass? Assuming the style / build is the same - talking about passive, 4 string JB type instruments.
When it comes to fretted basses, the main selling point for me is the better setup potential, as good fretwork and neck results in an instrument that is much easier and joyful to play. However, if we take the frets out of the equation, I'm not sure what to look for. My first idea was to get a MIA Fender or equivalent, and take it to a luthier for the Jaco treatment: defretting and epoxy coating. But I'm unsure if it would be better than doing the same with a cheapo bass (that had it's pickups upgraded).
