You'd probably get better results with a DI box than an SM57. If you have a kick mic like an RE-20 or a D112 that would be more appropriate for a bass cab.
Recording from an Ampeg 4x10.
Will a Shure SM57 do?
Can you please suggest some other possibilities.

I definitely would not rely solely on the SM-57. If you're going to blend it w/ a DI signal, it'll work. This topic has been covered a good bit, but IIRC, TB's search tool makes it difficult to search for "mic".
Are you looking to purchase a new mic? If so, what is your budget? Are you relying on what your buddies may have lying around, or are you going to a well-equipped studio?

It's bullet-proof(literally, firing a normal gun next to it won't distort it), it has a bass rolloff control, and it puts out what you give it. It also works well on anything else.
Use that + a DI and you'll be sure to have a great sound. Used one on an SVT 8x10 for about a decade and then on a Trace Eliiot 4x10. For both, the mic was positioned halfway between the dust cover and the outer edge of the speaker.

Senn 421 is a good choice, others are the EV RE20, beyer M88, Shure SM7, AKG D112. Any of these are quite a bit more money than an SM57 but quite a bit less than some of the stuff out there. You are gonna want a decent pre at some point as well. If you think G.A.S. is bad playing bass wait till you get in to recording.

Couldnt ask for a better list. Heres my question. Has anyone tried the transformer swap on a 57. Theres a tab-funkenwerk kit for like $85. Even if you had to buy the mic ($100). This is still the cheapest option. Its supposed to make the mic sound more like an sm7, a much better bass cab mic.
Otherwise I'm def with you guys, a 57 by itself is about the worst bass cab mic ever.

Tape Op message board might be a good place to look in to this, I've heard good things about modded 57's but never used one myself.
