It an '80s MIJ jazz SPECIAL. Inexpensive, but not a cheap bass.

I wouldn't say cheap is as defined to beginer instruments as you make out, I would say a £500 bass is a cheap bass for a proffesional to use.

That was a BB3000. They were killer basses! Killer!

My first *real* bass was a BB300. It was certainly cheesy, but it sounded great. I miss it.

Lots of indie bands use "cheap" instruments. When recording, however, it isn't uncommon to use a studio or rented instrument, no shame in that--it's half the fun of recording.

I have been in a studio about half a dozen times in the past 2 years or so. Each time I bring three basses, an American P, an American Jazz and a Yamaha BB300 with basslines pickups. I always ask the engineer what they would like me to use after I sample each one, every time it is the Yamaha. Cost me 200 bucks with the pickups.
