What software?

Hi all. I've found that lately that there is a lot of work for me recording bass tracks for local and producer friends on the west coast. I've been recording the out of town tracks at my friends home studio near Boston but it's very inconvenient I bought a new computer w windows 8 and an Mbox interface. I don't need full blown protools. I just record bass from a wave file.

What would everyone recommend for software? I'm not spending $700. Looking forward to some suggestions and advice

If all you need is to record then audacity is the right price. Free. Try that one first and then move along if you feel you must.

I like the licensing that Reaper has,very very well priced, plus those prices are for the life of the current version, ie including future updates.

Reaper looks great. I'm just recording bass and didn't want to break the bank.

I have no experience with Reaper, but I found Studio One very straight forward compared to Pro Tools.

Thing I like about Reaper is that you have something like 60 days to decide on the license. That plus the low cost makes it a no-brainer to try out.

Another vote for Reaper.

The 'demo' version will still be fully functional after the 60 days are up, you'll just get a nag-screen every time you fire it up.

I went thru every DAW demo I could get my hands on...Reaper beat them all, in part due to it being able to cross-platform; I record onto my Macbook and then transfer them to my Win7 desktop for mixing, mastering, everything else'ing. As long as my plugins match on both machines, moving from one OS to the other is seamless.

Audacity is a pretty good option for free. I have had no issues w/ any amp simulation/plugins in it, and for bass it is a pretty simple interface.
