To be fair, they’re technically “flats,” especially now that La Bella makes round tapewounds

But, yes, generally people mean nickel or stainless steel flats when they say “flats.”

Yes, you're right... Technically tapewounds are flatwound in the sense the outer wrap is a flat ribbon, the only difference being the material used for the cover, ie metal vs. nylon. That being said, most of us have our minds conditioned to distinguish between "tapes" and "flats".

I experimented with strings a lot during COVID, trying a different set every one or two months. It’s a relatively cheap and accessible way to change your tone.

The experiment did slow down when I got the six string, what with sets being more expensive and not as easily accessible, but also because the white tapes were my favourite strings I tried (I probably spent over $1,000 on strings).

My current bass is a short scale headless six string. I can’t put tapes on it, but if I could, I would definitely be wearing white tapes.
