I ordered the Rick w/ case for $775 :eek: from a Dealer who still to this day underprices everyone, always (but no longer sells Ricks.... I checked :mad:). The Ibanez 6 string had an MSRP around $1100, and w/ a trade-in you paid full price, so I had to throw in like (AARGH this is painful to admit)..... $500. The Rick didn't last a day in that store..... that guy made a killing off me! I must admit, I loved that 6 string and it changed everything. Yes, I went thru a Primus phase, LOL.

Then they would have a hit on their hands.

HAHAHA, I am not young and stupid anymore. :) I've actually had a very lucrative hobby of flipping instruments for nice profit, back when the economy was better. I once bought a Les Paul locally and sold it on ebay for $600 profit that same day. So maybe that Rick experience was well worth the lesson learned??

I was thinking about this the other day while I was at the gym (yes, I think about gear at the gym) and I came to this conclusion - regardless of how Digitech is not directly profiting from the sale of the Bass Whammy for $1000 on Ebay, they still have their name on it. I think that's the key, they have their name on a pedal which is being sold for a ridiculous amount of money and if they were to start mass producing a Bass Whammy again the 'novelty' (in the eyes of the consumer) would disappear and Digitech wouldn't look nearly as good anymore. Plus, they wouldn't be able to charge $1000 for something they re-issue, so it's not really in their interest to do it.

As someone else said, I don't think there are that many people who want a Bass Whammy, but the people who do really, really want it.

And I think it has been said previously that Digitech have no plans to release a Whammy V, as the IV does everything that everyone wants it to do, except for a few bass players who want the 5th/Oct setting to cover some Tool songs - it wouldn't be worth it to Digitech, because most people would see that the only difference was one extra setting and slightly better tracking, and there really aren't that many complaints about the tracking on the current whammy anyway. Therefore people aren't going to sell their IVs and buy a V - the only people buying Vs will be bass players and new players.

As someone who owns both a whammy I and a whammy IV, i'm in the enviable postition to say that i'd sell my IV for a V that had the oct/5th option and improved tracking for bass. its 2008, digitech could easily do a combined guitar/bass whammy, and they'd make a killing...it really is an obvious choice on their part.

as for the bass whammy, well i've never seen one in the flesh but i'd guess that the tracking cant be that much better than the I/IV? If (like me) you want that 5th/oct for tool, then the xp100 doesnt command silly money at the moment.

the time to buy the bass whammy was a few years ago....so you could sell it now. but that bubble is gonna burst. i'd be surprised if a revised whammy doesnt appear in 2 yrs.

As said, the demand is actually pretty small. As to why no one else is doing it- it's because it runs on a DSP. Everyone and their mother can put together an analog fuzz or filter, but implementing a computer program to control the sound is a whole different ballgame, and not something very many companies could tackle. The #1 company out there that could do one would be Electro Harmonix, but given that the Whammy already has it's own marketshare, they'd need to do something noticeably different to pull in enough of a market share to make it profitable. Adding better tracking for bass or maybe an extra harmony or two wouldn't be enough. What MIGHT make it worth it is if they went the route of the POG and put out a polyphonic whammy with the ability to do any harmony up to -1 octave and +2 octaves. I'd be all over that- sold my Bass Whammy because of the lack of polyphonic control.

I still don't know if EHX could pull that off. It'd be a very nice surprise though.

I have owned two fender rhodes from the early 70's, both in great condition, and one hohner clavinet that I completely refurbished. All of that is sold looong time age, today those things are worth about 300-400 percent of what I sold them for ...

Times change, think of the peeps who sold their 60's fender basses in the early 80's for near to nothing to buy a high tech crap bass or something in that direction ..

What EHX has going on inside of pedals like the HOG and POG is probably a lot more complex than the Whammy.
