What the?

So, after I finally decided that I was done tolerating the buzz/rattle from my Peavey's grill, I decided to attempt speaker removal. Now, it was missing a few screws, nbd. But some troglodyte managed to strip one of the holes a speaker screw was resting in :scowl: I decided to attempt pulling it out by other means, but no avail. I did, however, manage to look inside the cab. Appears to be little/no batting on the inside, and the speaker mag was square. I wasn't aware that the MK.I TNT 100 came with such a thing. So, I'm turning to TB to find out what speaker it is. It's a ribbed paper cone 15" with an orange surround and a square magnet. The dust cap is either stiff paper or thin aluminum with a tiny circular piece of fabric. I'm guessing it's a CTS speaker....but I really dunno. What I do know is that my amp is a whole new critter minus that grill :hyper::hyper:, no more rattles means no more need to cut bass by 18-20db, means that this thing is KILLER! I can't get the speaker to bottom out by running full bass boost at max volume.......what more can a man ask? :D

JBLs never had square magnets.
an orange surround was often used on cerwin vegas, but the speaker that your describing kinda doesn't sound like it's a vega.

alnico magnets were square-ish but also were described as a 'horeshoe'. there were ALOT of square magnet ceramic speakers in the 70's-80's, and they were usually made by CTS or Eminence.
here's a CTS square ceramic speaker with an aluminum dust cap and the small cloth vent:

If the part number on the speaker starts with a 67, it's eminence. 137 I think is CTS. Yes, they were in the old TNT 100's and some 215's. I think they actually sound pretty decent, but fart out before they get very loud. I used to practice with a guys old tnt100 with one in because it was at their house and I didn't have to carry an amp. It was a fartbox when cranked enough to hang with a heavy handed drummer. Peavey used those speakers in a lot of stuff before they started making Black Widows.

As far as the stripped screw, just rotate the speaker an inch or two and screw them all down into fresh wood.

Those were ceramic magnets. My first generation TNT came with one like that, orange fabric surround and vented dustcap. I still have a few CTS like that. Fender, Ampeg and Custom used them, too. Wonderful speakers. Some had thick (.5" top plates) and overhung coils that had good excursion and a smooth breakup.

Yup, sounds like the CTS is the item. However, I can't get it to fart out at any volume I've subjected it to. At any rate, it sounds DAMN good, and it will easily bury any of the low wattage combos my guitar playin friends use. Regardless, I am a bit disappointed that the grill pretty much can't be mounted if I wish to avoid extraneous noises.
