What to do with fresh cut timber.

We recently had a horse chestnut tree in our garden cut down, and I asked to have a section to use to make a bass. Its about 6cm thick, 150cm long and 75cm wide.
I was wondering what I should do, should I leave it to season? If so for how long?
Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Tom

Paint or wax the end grain and stack it such that air can get around the entire piece. If you have multiple pieces stickering it with small pieces of wood between layers of the stack will allow air to get around it. Don't put it in the sun or near a heat source. You want it to dry slowly. A good rule of thumb is 1year per 1 inch of thickness. I think that translates to about 2 years for your wood. Good luck
