What to get for my second bass?

I'm going to 2nd two options: PJ and semi-hollow. I picked up a cheap Yamaha PJ and fell in love with it. It's a great configuration. As for semi-hollow's, I've never owned one but after playing the Fender Starcaster at GC I could easily see myself getting one. Very different from what I'm used to with solid body basses, in a good way.

In terms of an actual bass to purchase, I would recommend a Fender Aerodyne Jazz- it's a little above your price range, but perhaps a sale promotion or two and it'll be under it.
Other basses on the other side of the price spectrum are the Squier Jaguars with the PJ configuration.
Something like this... odd because it says it's CAD$199 in the previous page yet $329 on this one. It might be on sale?

I bought that exact bass from that exact shop. $329.I just added a babicz bridge. It's a great bass.

I am planning on going and doing some looking today. I have a lot of options to look at that I had never thought of before.

I think I will look to try out some 5 strings, I have been happy with 4 until now but that would give my second bass the extended tonal range. I have a brief period with a 5 string but sold it get get some cash a while back. Didn't have it for enough time to really evaluate it.

Also I am going to try to play a bunch of different brands and models. I would like to get my hands on a modern player jag. It wasn't on my radar but looks really nice and has the PJ setup. Thanks for all the suggestions.

I believe the ones here and in Canada are all black- there are more color varieties with the Aerodyne basses in Japan, you often see them on Ebay- I can't help but drool at those. The Gift certificate I'm assuming is for a local music store over there in Canada?
If I didn't have a Fender PJ bass already in my collection (I have a JP-90), I would certainly go for the Aerodyne myself.

That's right, Max! I finally got the bass that's been at the top of my GAS-list…a Candy Apple Red Non-Export Aerodyne!! There's a whole story about it, but I'll save that for the Aerodyne Club thread when I have some proper pics (looks effin' sweet with some DR Black Beauties! :cool:). It's a little heavier than my export-edition. That's probably from the extra hardware and more wood (no rear-rout), but at a mere 9.5lbs…well, I think I can handle it!

@Chaser1 : If you haven't visited it yet, there's a link to the Aerodyne Club in my sig. For the record, I approve of you looking into the CAR 'Dyne. And to clarify some potential-future confusion, "Export Aerodynes" are the all-black, zero-pickguard, Strat-jacked ones that are exported from Japan on a regular basis. "Non-Export Aerodynes" come in a variety of colors, some with pickguards/control plates, a five-string edition, a 32" medium-scaler, etc…

Wow..... Malak! That's TWO basses I'm hoping you leave in your will to me. Sweet looking Aerodyne! How does it compare with your export black one? Is there any significant playability differences between the two?

My first thought reading the thread from the beginning was a fretless-like some others.
It's what I did.
I had considered just a long scale, but fretted, as my first bass is a short scale, but gradually over the years decided ona fretless--and I'm not regretting it or looking back--I love it.

The Godin suggestion above is a very good one as well.
I like those.
