What was it/ what is like it?

  1. Hey all, mystery time!
I was in my local GC today and I noticed a pretty decent 1970 Gibson EB 3 on the wall with the slotted headstock (which grabbed my attention) But when I was noodling around on it, I noticed it's strings were like playing on glossy rubberized cabling. It had a very smooth almost shiny texture and it had a very nice vintage thump to it.

But neither myself nor the best of the GC employees today could answer my question: What the hell are they?

so were they silver or black?

    if silver, flatwounds
if black, black nylon tape wounds

  3. They were black, and I would have known if they were flats, I use DR flats now anyway.

Fairly certain they are nylon tapewounds then? They lacked any form of seam or subtle winding to them, at least to the naked eye and finger. But seeing as you'd probably be the one to know, what gets as close as possible to that?

    Black Nylone Tapewounds then...

if they were flat to the touch that is... They are usually very smooth since some of them are machined flat to remove any ridges after they are wound. You can see the sandpaperish grind marks when they are brand new.

  5. Yup, they were perfectly flat ans smooth to the touch, so nylon tapewounds it is then. Thanks man!
