Double Bass What would be a good rosin for southern Illinois?

Hi everyone! I’m new to bass and plan to start renting an upright soon. Now, i have a somewhat old cake of pops, from about November when I first tried out the bass if I’m remembering right. Now, i plan to keep using it till it goes bad, but I’m learning now that rosin is very weather dependent. Here in southern Illinois we have very cold and very dry winters (a temp of 26.3 degrees as the January average) and very hot humid summers (as high as 89 as an average in my town). So it’s hard to find something that works for both. Do you guys have any recommendations? I’m planning on doing mainly classical if that makes any difference, although I also plan on doing some folk stuff like the Decemberists and the crane wives

Here in St. Louis, I am using the Leatherwood BASS rosin and am happy with it. Caveat: I do live in air conditioning with humidity control. My teacher was unfamiliar with this rosin, but she is now ordering a cake for herself.

I’ve heard of it, although I’ve seen it is quiet expensive. But I’ll keep it in mind

Pop’s 9 months out of the year, Kolstein Soft for the summer does it for me in a similar climate to yours. And a cake of Swedish rosin hanging around for those dreadful outdoor summer pops gigs.

Spring for a boveda humid pack and some type of air tight container to keep whatever you buy inside of when you aren't using it.

If you’re wanting to play orchestral music, maybe save up & spend a bit more to find a used hybrid, like a Shen SB-150. The solid top will sing in an orchestra, compared to a laminate. It’ll last you longer too as you may not feel the need to upgrade so quickly.

Absolutely. There's Rosin saver, the Gollihur version, or you can put something together on your own. Since I got really conscientious about this, I've used Nyman kept in a humidified container, and it's working for me. I have a cookie tin with my rosin experiment collection and a 72% Boveda humidipack, and the 3 year old Pop's looks and feels brand new.

Same. I just played a set, 78F, humid, with the 30% and had a crisp attack all the way to the end.
I'd recommend Wiedoeft bass rosin as a more all around. Pops will turn to vaseline half the year around here, Kolstein is solid but it is best not to support them based on lots of shady dealings they have had that came to light recently.

A second for Wiedoft for the summer. I decided to give it another try and so far it’s been working very well in a very humid New England summer. It hasn’t melted at all and still has plenty of bite to it.
