The one I had for a while was a fretless, and to me, the “Wal sound” is that of Percy Jones, Mick Karn, and to a lesser extent, the guy from the band Stump, Kev Hopper(in fact, I got the bass through a Karn related contest). However, those instruments have so many options that you can just make it your own. Why did Paul have one? Why not? It was the first English bass that was a big deal in a long time(at that time), if ever.

I agree. That's the Wal sound for me too. Just don't see the connection with Macca's Hofner or Rick old school sound and the midrangy Wal sound. I know you can do more on a Wal, but for that old school round sound there a other basses that do that better. Does he really use the B string a lot? Haven't heard that with Macca either. But maybe I have just not heard those songs where he used the B string.

There’s plenty of low end, you just have to set it up for that. Then, think of how midrangey the bass(Ric?)was on “Silly Love Songs”, all punch, no bottom.

I don't consider his lack of buying instruments to be connected to penny pinching even if he were frugal.

I've never really enjoyed buying instruments, and have never had more than what I need.
