What would you do?

I guess I would only say take the job if two things were true; 1) the extra money was make-or-break for your ability to pay the bills and care for your family (i.e. you can't quite make ends meet now but the extra money would get you over the edge to stability) and 2) there was a clear OTHER job with better hours that you would be able to move on to within a reasonable period of time (say after a year). I wouldn't sacrifice family for a few extra bucks that you don't really need, but if this was a necessary stepping-stone to something significantly better, it MIGHT - might - be worth the sacrifice for a year or so.

I've not run the numbers, but, going from what I assume is an 8 hour shift 5 days a week to 11 or 12 hours, 5 or 6 days a week, sounds like you're not getting a raise at all, you're just working more hours. Multiply 4 hours a day times 5 days times 52 weeks and see if that doesn't come close to your 6 to 8 thousand dollar difference. Now look at the time lost with your family. There's no decision!

Thanks slick, that's one angle I haven't gotten around to looking at yet. The hours is one con I haven't looked at too much. The shift is was gets me. Honestly, if it was 7am to say 6pm, I'd probably take it. Well, I'd at least be more inclined to.

I appreciate all the thoughts and opinions on this. All of you have helped reaffirm the perspective I had/have on it. Thank you to all.

12 hr shifts will make you old and dead before your time! They want you to work until 11PM and then come in on Sat morning. Are they going to allow you to sleep at all? And when you drop dead they will cast you aside and find another soul to screw around with. I've been there and done that and finally quit the company while I still had my health. Don't do it. The extra money isn't worth your health, sanity and wellbeing. Family comes first plus you are making money with your band so why give it up. Don't sell your mind, body and soul to a greedy company that only cares about numbers so the suits can get big bonuses. Take care of your self, no one else will. :):bassist:

One other thing too, the guy who is retiring, he used to have the shift that that job is offering me. He ended up getting a divorce while he worked the night shift over a course of about 6 or 7 years. He said it was because of all the stress it cased his family because he was never there.

It seems like a lot of responses are based on the priorities of that particular person who is posting, which many state as family.

So you know what they would do with their priorities, but that really should not affect your decision at all. Many people would not list their family as their first priority (at least not at that particular moment in time). Intelligence workers, police officers, military personnel, politicians, touring/professional musicians. Some might say family is first, but their actions and their duties say otherwise. They have chosen paths that require sacrificing that part of their lives now for payoff later (or maybe never). Don't forget that there's more than one way to "be there" for your family. You and your partner get to decide how that will play out, and what the expectations are.

It's important that you make a decision based on your priorities and life goals you (and your partner) have set, which if I'm reading your original post right, would be a) family, b) band, and c) job.

I think you already know the answer :)

12 hour shifts is insane.

To me that would be unacceptable. To me my hobbies and my personal life are very important. I've had opportunities to interview at jobs in bigger cities that would pay more and I've passed them up because my family is here and my friends are here.

6-8 grand isn't all that much in the grand scheme of things if it means you aren't going to be happy. I also know your band is very important to you so if it were me, in your situation, I'd pass on that promotion and those hours.

You can always job hunt for other higher paying jobs with more normal hours, right?

My dad always said, work to live, don't live to work.

Thanks bro. I like that last quote by your dad, good stuff.

Mind y'all, I've been at this job for almost 15 years. So if I took it just to catch up and then go somewhere else after I did, it wouldn't work out too great IMO. You never know though, life has a funny way sometimes. At this point, I'm not taking the job. Well see what the future holds.
