That question, as well as my (and others) sugesstion of chorus has led me to experiment with my Aphex PF (very transparent, but includes a DI), English Muff'n and my CEB-3. I finally settled on: CEB-3 -> EM -> PF. I was amazed that the PF alone brought out a nice sound from my EM. IME the Muff'n doesn't sound that great direct. The tone I got is amazingly like what comes out of my practice amp! And, because you can set the XLR to output the effect even when the 1/4" is outputing the dry signal, I was able to confirm this! Anyway I placed the CEB in front of the EM and it gives me a real growl and really enhances the EM. This may become my new band rig!

Did this one up just for this thread (while experimenting, of course), and I believe that it better illustrates the chorus -> dist effect. The CEB-3's settings were (L to R, o'clock positions): 5, 3, 9 and 3. I useualy leave the E.Level (the 5) on 3 just to make it a little more subtle but you should get the idea.

what does it matter what we would pick? like you said, what works for us may not work for you... the best thing you can do is go try some stuff out and/or get a better idea if you actually NEED another effect or you just WANT one for the hell of it.... if you dont NEED it then just save your money till the need comes around for something else

That's just downright jerkish of you :mad:

Cus of the demos I've done for this thread, I've come to realize a few things:

1) My bass on it's own = :)
2) My bass with chorus -> transparent comp = :cool:
3) My bass with chorus -> tube od/dist -> transparent comp = :eek:

I think it's good to rethink your board every once in a while (no comments from the peanut gallery, thank you), and maybe come up with some new ideas. And maybe even rediscover old setups that work great, like my PDDI by itself :D

Wah, flange, or delay.

Flange sounds really good over "heavy" distorted parts, and overall sounds better than chorus (IMO). If you can find a Boss BF-2 flanger, you'd be set--one of the best flangers around. Or you can go with the Boss BF-3, which is also a good flanger, and then you could mess around with the tremolo function, which is pretty cool.
For a very cool flange-bassline, check out "Settle for Nothing" by Rage Against The Machine, the flange can add a very cool and creepy vibe to songs.

Or wah, because wah is awesome. Useable in almost any situation, if you know how to use it right. Very fun stuff.

I don't have a delay yet, but I'm looking at a Boss DD-3, which sounds pretty good to my ears and should have some uses.

Anyway, between those three, I'd prolly pick Wah first, but the other two are also great.

I'm in a trash metalband (just started writing originals), with lots of heavy riffin, solo's, duals, not to much double bass, sometimes a clean verse, well... you know the deal.:bassist:
I play mostly with a pick, but I'm working on fingerstyle and slap.

So my pedals are (or will be)
compressor (looking for the right one) but will be always on.
Xotic Bass BB Preamp used in moderation: during the duals, when I play alone, in some groovin' parts... and it takes care of all my od/dist/fuzz needs

Requierements for the pedal
- goes well with clean and distortion
- something I'll use often (more than once)
- something I'll use with my band (not just on my own in my bedroom):bassist:
- no tone suck;)
- no tuner, volume pedal, synth, envelope filter, multiFX, looper or blender:rolleyes:

So what would you add if you could only add 1 pedal and tell me what you'd use it for?
(I'm asking for YOUR opinion, not advice (wise guy talk) like 'get out and try everything', 'it's all up to you', 'Cliff used wha, get a wha', 'what works for me, might not work for you'...:hiding: )

well you have a splitter....I'm guessing that does ONLY what it sounds like it would do, or it's a looper or something of the like.

IMHO it sounds like your going to be doing a lot of thrash covering guitar like riffs with a distorted bass, which is really cool (i know i know, it's a bass but i mean c'mon, your running distorted). it also sounds like this setup is flexible with soloing and stuff. So if I were you I'd probably get a delay. instead of making your tone wobble or tighten up or sound like its' underwater (chooorus), why not? And the best part is, is that if your doing a really good solo, with a lot of delay behind it, you could practically harmonize yourself or just let it rip!

If you like it, you'll be joining the rest of us BF-2 fans... :D

You can use it as a sort of faux-chorus as well. Or, if you don't end up liking it, pursue a real chorus pedal like the Boss CEB-3 Bass Chorus, or the EHX Small Clone (my new favorite chorus :)).
