i know that just because you have a head that pushes an ass ton of watts...doesn't mean you'll be loud. It's all about the little guys(speakers)...or sometimes big like in my case. I have an old Fender BXR Spectrum with 2 10's and an 18.
When i first started on here and asking questions about wattage and the what nots i was told a few times that the more speakers=the louder. Not specifically but you get the picture.
Well i need to be a tad bit loud so would you ad just a 4x10 or would just 2 more little tens be fine?

I don't know anything about your BXR (wattage-ohms, etc) but if your cab has an 18 and 2-10's, then essentially you are already driving two cabs. By adding another cab, your rig will only become louder if your amp has the power to drive all the speakers. A wall of speakers requires a stack of amps in order to be effective.

yeah i forgot about that...the Spectrum is 300watt rms. oh and it's 4 ohm. The 2 10's are new jensen mods.

I suspect that since you are already driving 2-10's and an 18, adding another cab would not increase your effective output unless you add wattage.

While I think a understand where dog1 is headed, I think we are a long way from the problem of minimum excursion and phase cancelation from multiple drivers (from a given input wattage).

I had one of the Spectrum cabs back in the 80's. I used a GK 400RB, and never had volume issues. The cab is a bit dated, by today's standards, but it'll take a punch. Give it more juice, you may be surprised.

My thought was that pushing an 18 and 2-10's with only 300 watts is not exactly overkill. And adding a 410 to the mix would not increase the volume to any degree. Frankly, in his situation, I would probably try a 500 watt+ amp before I thought about another cab.

To get any real gain by use of amp wattage alone it would need to be more along the lines of 900 watts. It takes more electronic power (watts) to increase acoustic output than an increase in surface area will give you, up to a point. The existing cab would also need to have the ability to convert the added power to safe (in limits) piston movement.

Yu might try running an MXR Micro Amp

The real question is...can you run your amp down to 2 ohms? My first feeling is that 300w isn't enough power to be really 'loud'. Yes, I used a 300w amp for many years on stage, but wasn't being challenged by excessive guitar volume. An old 18x2/10 also hits me as being not a terribly efficient cab, so you may not be getting the most from your amp anyway.

Keep in mind, that if each of your speakers are getting the same wattage, then you're driving 3 100w. speakers...which isn't really very much.

I personally would ditch the big rig and find a decent 4x10 and a 15 or a second 4x10.

so from the looks of it im getting that i would need a huge amp or just ditch the cab. Adding a 2x10 or 4x10 to the mix would actually not improve anything towards getting me louder. Am i wrong by thinking a 300 watt cab is fairly loud? that was my assumption but i will admit i am not very knowledgeable when it comes to certain things with musical equipment.

I ran a 300 watt G-K 800rb with a 215 cab for close to a decade, large gigs I used PA support but minimal. It never failed to get the job done with two guitars and loud drummer. If the cab doesn't use the wattage well dump it, if the amp says 300 watts but instead is whimpy, move up to a new one. Adding the 410 would get you louder and provide you better cut in the mix. Just experience talking, take it for what it's worth.

In this case all depends on how the cab is set up. If the eighteen is crossed over to the tens so the tens only work in the mids and highs more power may help. But if not the Jensen Mods, which are guitar spec drivers, will fart out long before the eighteen is fully working and more power won't help. And there's still the matter of how good the eighteen is; Fender has never been known for the quality of its OEM drivers.

sorry for the delayed response. It does have a crossover. I do not know if it does what your saying...

The cab may be very inefficient. Modern 4x10 cabs may outperform it in volume without changing the amp, and you just sell the Fender cab. You might experiment to see whether that is the case.
