Double Bass What's on your pedal board? (DB Forum Thread)

I didn't think I'd ever need to, but I've got enough pedals accumulating for upright that it's going to warrant building a whole board. I'm running


upright ---> HPF-PREv3---> Boss CS-2 compression sustainer ---> tuner ----> volume pedal ----> EHX Pog octave generator -----> EHX 45000 looper ----> amp.


My saxophone pedal rig is a little silly over-the-top and it has always bugged me, so I am intending to keep it as simple as possible, but don't want to limit my possibilities.

I'm wondering - what's on your pedal board and why/when do you use it?

I shan’t need reverb or distortion… right…?

Strangely i just started building my upright pedal board yesterday and am working out the kinks. I plan to use it for loud "modern" gigs that i do with a couple groups that want a double bass on stage but are not playing acoustic music. Currently:

Realist > Sarno Black Box > Sansamp Paradriver > Keeley Neutrino(Mutronish pedal) > head

I may work in my Boss digital delay later today. I plan to pickup some sort of compressor soon too. Other effects i would like to explore would be an octaver, chorus, wah, overdrive, and fuzz.

Its when you forgot the changes to the bridge, so you play just one root until something jogs your memory.

In the cover bands I'm in I use a Boss gt1-b. In my original death metal band I use this, all on all the time. The decimator has two channels, I run the wireless into channel 1, out to the compressor, then the eq, Alpha/Omega, BBE, then into channel 2 and out to the amp.
This board sits on top of my rack and there's a separate adapter for the markbass as it draws too much juice for the power supply to handle.

For the one of the experimental bands I play - I have a Ventris reverb, wah, Loop Station - 20 XL and analog delays by Malekko and Pigtronix envelope filter and sometimes I also connect to a Korg MS-20 analog synth or Model-D clone. I used to also have an Eventide H9. I use a bow as well to produce soundscapes and far out sounds

Echo and/or reverb for music that calls for lush bowed sounds. Obviously not for situations where a natural sound is appropriate.

When a non-jazz or trad BL sees the bow, in my experience, they think it should sound like a full orchestra string section in a concert hall when it’s used. Since one lonely stringed instrument can’t really do that the echo and reverb seem to help get closer to that expectation. I wonder if I should try chorus for that too?

I have pedals for my EB and the ambient/noise stuff I do. Never occurred to me to run arco passages through reverb pedal for more effect. Will have to give that a try.

More than just a reverb pedal, I like a long delay with arco and my Earthquaker Spatial Delivery goes over the top when I want the delay to turn into arco spaceship sounds.

You guys sure are giving me a lot to think about (and research!) and I sure do appreciate it! Here’s what I’ve come up with, but I’m far from locking it in. The Gamechanger “Plus” pedal proved way too fun on bass to leave out. The microPOG is the standout hero, especially with the looper. Compression sustainer is on the fence. It adds something (or rather, subracts), for sure, but is it worth the real-estate?
The reverb won its place because hell ya arco sounds killer through it.
Both the plus pedal and the 4500 looper open up a staggering amount of possibilities not only in performance, but also just in routing the signal chain. Thanks again for the help, ya’ll.


Edit: holy bebop arco lines, gang — I threw the envelop filter (EHX riddle Q balls) after the POG octave junt and I swear this is the golden ticket to making my bebop articulation really come out under the bow. Ive been primarily a horn player for 25+ years, (saxes/woodwinds/cornet/valve bone), so being able to access an approximation to these sounds on my new main axe is pretty groundbreaking for me. Neat!

Just added a Keeley Bassist comp to my chain...definitely a welcome addition. I have never used a compressor on upright bass but it definitely helps out when running through what is essentially an electric bass rig.
