What's the best amp for EBMM basses?

Do any/many of you play stingrays through tweeter-less cabs ?

Or another way to ask... do you think tweeter loaded/full range cabs, are critical or preferred to get the full 'ray' sound ?

(With the mention of SVT rigs, I'm guessing 810's are most often paired, but not many have said what they use...)

Well I play mostly in studio so the fan cooling of an SVT is less than ideal.
Also they are more difficult to power soak, so I use a mid seventies V4b or a Hiwatt clone or a Simms Watts AP 200 Super.
Or any pairing of same via a wide range of cabs dependant on tonal needs.
I have an Eden 8x10LXT, a pair of Altec 418 Series II Alnico option SVT115's or an old laney diagonal sealed 2x12 with a pair of very rare EVM12S's fitted.
A ported cab with a JBL D120f in it and another ported box with an Altec 417 Series II 12" speaker.
All sound different. There is no real best, just best for this song.

None of my cabs have tweeters and I believe I am getting the full "ray" sound!

Most of my cabs have tweeters, except this old, sealed 410 iI love so much.

I have to admit that the tweeters are turned off most of the time. And I sure have what we call "Ray sound".

My sterling HH sounds killer through my GK MB500. Clear, crisp, aggressive and it cuts through the mix like a knife. I got some nice compliments on my tone last gig. I also just acquired a TH500 and the MM sounds great through that too. With that said, the TH seems to tame the MM tone but in a good way. You can still tell it's a MM but it's more mellow, warm and round. You can of course dial back in more grit with the AGS but it's different than the GK growl. I can't wait to try it out live and A/B it with the MB500.

can you tell me what the AGS is you're referring to? I have a tone hammer 500 and just got a used '19 stingray. It sounds more "stingray" like on my old hartke kickback than on the tone hammer. It still sounds great but it's lacking that bite/growl that I'm looking for. Any tips on how to dial that in with the TH? Thanks.

I gigged a lot of years with an SWR (Workingman's 12) and it sounded magnificent. I would like to try the EBMM Audiophile gear. There are some used ones floating around. Another killer rig I once played was that big dog Aguilar (751) through a 412. Wow. Loved it.

Don't use the Drive function at all. Bring up your gain until you start to hear it get wholly then back it off. Make any fine adjustments to your EQ and revisit your Gain. Now use your Master for your volume control.

Sorry, but that post is from a long time ago and both the bass and the TH are long gone, but it looks like @SJan3 has some good advice for you.

Can't go wrong with the Mesa WD800 with whatever Subway cab flavors you like. Both my Stingray and Big Al sound GREAT thru them. Used GK MBF800/MB800 for many years but the Mesa Subway gear is smoother and has a rounder tone. Highly recommended!

EBMM through an SVT. Works for AC/DC. Ideal pairing for P Bass and J Bass would be the SVT too. That amp with those basses just creates that sound, in the same way any Gibson guitar into a Marshall stack does in that it just represents an entire era. Just creates the sound of the 70s when I hear it.

A MM sounds great through a Ampeg B-15 if you are just recording. It is what Cliff uses in the studio and on the majority of songs recorded for AC/DC albums.

Yes I know this is a zombie thread, but it's been resurrected so WTH.

I've played Stingrays through several different amps (Ampeg, Fender, Mesa, GK, Orange, TC, Ashdown, Aguilar) and the one that gives me the biggest smile is the Genz Benz Streamliner. Stingray and Streamliner equals awesome.

With the TH500, you can run it just fine with the gain control off.
So, with the advice above, I'd try the gain and drive off first.
I use the mid frequency control to add a little low mids- level at about 2 o'clock.

Thanks! I've been playing around with it now that I know the gain doesn't have to be up and it definitely sounds better than it did before. I thought the gain was signal going into the head and that if it were off you'd get no sound. Never occurred to me to have it all the way down.

I'm still tossing around the idea of switching to a gk legacy 800 head tho. After doing some more research and watching demos I think that head fits my playing style more than the tone hammer.

Have to agree with Wicked G, Stingray + Genz Benz is an amazing combination.
I'd have to say, per my own experience, that a Reeves C225 pairs well, too.
