Pickups and preamps. Just about every bass I’ve owned has been modded. Suprisingly, I just grabbed a passive Bacchus P Bass that I plan to do nothing with. I just added StrapLoks.
Removed the Greasebucket circuit from my 2011 Fender American Special Precision.
Turning the volume knob full tilt CCW.
Beyond that, getting the right pickups for whatever tone I want a particular bass to fulfill.

Depends on the bass - but generally, humbucking J pickups and upgraded bridges.
I highly recommend the bridge from Performance Music Products on Amazon - made a world of difference on both of my MIM Fenders, and the price is right. Hipshot Kickass is also fantastic.

It was a long time ago but the best mod I ever made was telling my guitards to shut up as I set my strap height with NO regard to aesthetics.
Hipshot Ultralite tuners. Not really a sound improvement, but definitely an ergonomic one.
One time I stripped a poly finish, and once the bass was able to breathe, its tone improved remarkably like 200% better tone.
I love those strings. What the issue w them?
Best Mod ever was putting an Ebony Fingerboard on my SX Jazz clone 6 (avatar) making it fretless. Got a few blank ebony fingerboards in different sizes before CITES shut them down. Installed one on my SX ($200) 6 string jazz clone. Put on GHS Brite flats ground wounds. (and to be honest I also installed a new bridge which it didn't need but I did for looks and rewired the VVT controls to Volume and switched pickups ...Neck only, series, parallel, bridge only, mute..., but that was just because I hate VVT setups)
Now I love this bass at the same level I love my G&L, Modulus and Alembic. For a $200 bass I find that totally amazing. (Especially considering the price of a discontinued Steve Bailey)

I've had them on three different basses. Two G&Ls and a Human Base.
They made one of the G&Ls and the Human Base sound absolutely dull. I even wondered if my Glockenklang pre had a problem.
Out of the three, they were almost acceptable on the G&L L-1505, an extremely bright and trebly bass. I ended up changing them for DR Pure Blues which are also good at reining in the L-1505's crazy but are to my ears much more subtle.
Plus the Low B feels like rubber to me.
I should add I'm not at all a D'Addario hater. I love their half rounds.

Also (non-bass) stringing an old Ovation acoustic guitar with mandolin/Irish bazouki tuning by adding a couple of banjo tuners. Full scale, GDAD on two courses per note. Loud as you like, and very unusual.
