Whats the best muff for bass?

Do any of the above mentioned pedals run at 18v? If I remember correctly, none of the EHX ones do. I've found that chorus pedals at 18v seem to work better (than 9v ones) for bass, I wonder if it would be the same for muff/fuzz pedals.

You could mod the caps to run at 18.

Depends on the amp you're running it in to as well...

I have the Bass Big Muff and dig it alright. If I want more nastyness with bigger bottom I use the Swollen Pickle.

My advice would be to pick out 2 or 3 fuzzes that you like to have some options on your board.

Running a Muff at more than 9V is not a good idea. Usually the caps won't take it AND, the imo most important thing, it won't do anything special. It will still sound like a Muff (maybe a little different, but not worth the hassle!).

My current favorite Muff is the Ltd Lime Green Beast from Eathbound Audio.
Based on the Rams Head Muff, but with additional Feedback modes and Diode Switching.
There is an LED mode on a toggle switch which is just the best thing in the world as far as I've experienced with any Fuzz.

The other Muffs I've got to compare it to are the Way Huge Swollen Pickle MKII, EH Bass Big Muff and the Earthbound Supercollider Beast.

I like the Green Russian Muff. But I've never tried the Black one or the Civil War Muff.

But the Green keeps all the lows in the signal.

Yeah man, it has been brutalized over the years. It's usually a sign of a 'good one' though... someone loved it enough to haul it all over the place!

I've owned the Black Russian Muff and I currently own the XO Little Big Muff.

I wouldn't recommend either to anyone for serious use on bass.

Seems like the Bass Big Muff is the way to go.

I've owned a few green muffs (3), a few more black muffs (5), Little Big Muff, a Fuzzrocious Green Stache, Wren & Cuff Pickle Pie B (the one that Grygryx reviewed on BassFuzz.com), an Earthbound Audio Supercollider (with Mid Switch), a Blackout Effectors Musket V2 and got a chance to A/B the Musket with a Earthquaker Devices Hoof Fuzz, I've also tried a Bass Big Muff.

Other muff-like fuzzes i've owned/Tried (ie: they're not muff circits but sound alot like muffs:

Colorsound Tonebender
Colorsound Bass Fuzz - based on a Jumbo Tone Bender
Myrtyl Pedals Corvid Fuzz (with Flat Mids) - bassed on a Supa Tonebender
SFX Micro Fuzz (very similar to the Colorsound Bass Fuzz, but with higher quality components, Much Much smaller, 9v input)
Electronix (now Ziebek) MessDrive Hybrid+

Of ehx muffs i've tried - the Green wins all, just seems fatter and creamier and more natural on bass, the Black is a little tighter and refined - still creamy and keeps the lows with the tone down (the green has more useable bass tones higher up the Tone control).
Didnt get on with the Little big Muff that much - the Bass Big muff was great, but I didnt feel that it sounded as 'special' as the russians.

The Wren & Cuff PPb had an amazing grind to it and is very versatile with the filter and clean blend.

The Fuzzrocious Green Stache just sounded great - it wasnt hard finding a great muff sound.

The Colorsound Tonebender sounded great for Stoner Rock-type tones and kept the bass really well - but its not great for crunchier more harmonic-filled sounds. Like the colorsound bass fuzz, the tone control keeps the bass intact quite far along its range, more so than a muff.

The Colorsound Bass Fuzz and SFX Micro Fuzz have a large mid scoop which actually makes the sound of the pedal - the low end is MASSIVE - I had the tone control at 3 o'clock and still got tonnes of bass and treble - i've not seens another fuzz that will keep that much bass in the signal without a clean blend. Also has a great synth-like sound with the gain up.

The supercollider gets alot of love round here but I didnt love it as much - just a personal preference - Its possible that I would have prefered the version with the mid-control, rather than that mid switch.

The Musket is pretty great - very versatile with its mid cntrl and PreGain control - I had it applied to the high end of my signal (via a SFX X&M Crossover Mixer) for a great biting distortion that loves to feedback - the Musket (unblended) also won out with my A/B with the Hoof Fuzz - it just sounded thicker and nicer to me.

Oh I also had a Sonic VI Champion Fuzz that I regret selling everyday - its also based on a tonebender (well its based on the B&M Champion fuzz, which is also based on a tonebender) - its a great fuzz that just sat beautifully in the mix.

I am the proud new owner of one of the first edition green Russian Big Muffs, with the thin, taller font and the gray knobs. It sounds incredible for bass. In the past, I've tried three different USA reissue Big Muffs and never got into them, ended up selling all three. The green one just has a better overall sound which is hard to explain, but I'm liking it a lot. I think it sounds best with a Proco Rat right after it in my effects chain, with the Rat's distortion almost completely off. It adds just a hit of midrange which really makes the Muff more present in the mix. Any old EQ pedal would do the same trick, but I already had a Rat lying around, and it works great for my needs.

Russian Green Muff for me. Mine is almost identical to the one grygrx has. Slightly different knobs, same ol' clunky thermonuclear bomb shelter door buzzer button foot switch. Tried most of the newer ones excluding BBM and new EHX models. This was the first pedal I purchased over 10 years ago. Will never trade. Far too fat and creamy, much more musical than others. My pots are dirty though.

The Black Muff is a tighter version. Loses something though, sounds less organic. The NYC models aren't worth a pinch of pigeon poo IMHO.
