Whats the best muff for bass?

Ive owned a big muff(the biggest one), and it sounded too dry for my liking, but recently ive seen people on youtube with the black russian muff and it sounded pretty darn good. Is it the best one for bass? say i want a creamy thick tone with good sustain

Btw, I uses an ibanez PD-7 as of now, and while its got a good sound I find that the hiss is unbearable at times with a high gain setting, do you think that a muff will be significantly less noisy than that?

I don't know about best; that's a bit like asking which fruit's best oranges or bananas. My preference for heavy Bass overdrive is certainly the ordinary ol' black Russian Big Muff.

Choosing specifically a Muff, I'd choose the D*A*M Ram Head (No longer produced, unfortunately), which is, basically, a replica of the 2nd edition of the Electro Harmonix Big Muff Pi + modern features (True Bypass, status LED..)

I A/B'd the black russian Big Muff and the Bass Big Muff and walked out of the store with the Bass Big Muff even though my mind was set to the russian at first (and some extra space on the pedal board for another pedal). In "normal" mode, the Bass Big Muff will give you pretty much the same sound as a black russian muff, knobs not at the same settings exactly but if you take a few minutes, you will get the same tone or so from the bass version then from the russian. Then, the Bass Muff has a bass boost and the dry/wet mix options that can get you a step further to find your sound. Try the Bass Big Muff, it might seem too common but it's good.

get a used bass big muff - there MAY be better fuzzes out there, but not for 50 bucks!

Agreed, BBM is a better place to start that an NYC and it has more options (and is less expensive) than a Black Russian.

From there, the sky is the limit for muff clones.

I've had a bunch of fuzz pedals over the years...

Now'a days i have two:

-EHX BBM
-SanfordAndSonny Bluebeard


The Bluebeard is my fave fuzz i've owned.



FWIW: I also use an EHX Holy Stain on my guitar board... the Fuzz circuit on it is pretty damn good on bass... especially the 'Dark' setting.

+1 for the Fuzzrocious 'Stache. Very muffish and yet so much more.

I also really like what I've heard from the Wren & Cuff Tri Pie 70. I'd really like to try one, but the 'Stache won't allow any other fuzzes in the house.

Had a black Big Muff once, hated it because it always sucked the bottom end from my tone. I ended up tossing that pedal into the crowd one show...someone kept it, good riddence.

Fast forward several years to today, have the Bass Big Muff and loooooooooove it! The dry/blend makes all the difference. And since doing the volume pot mod, it gets all the fuzz I could want.

Do any of the above mentioned pedals run at 18v? If I remember correctly, none of the EHX ones do. I've found that chorus pedals at 18v seem to work better (than 9v ones) for bass, I wonder if it would be the same for muff/fuzz pedals.
